Good Friday and Kozunak

Today is Good Friday in Bulgaria.  Bulgaria commemorates passion week according to the Orthodox calendar.  Often this means that we celebrate Easter on a different day than our western counterparts.

We remembered Jesus' death on the cross for our sins as a family tonight.  We gathered around the table, read the story of the last supper, and had the Lord's Supper together.  It is a blessing to remember Jesus' sacrifice for us as a family.

Sasha spent most of the afternoon in the kitchen making bread.  She made three very large loves of the traditional Bulgarian Easter bread called Kozunak.  It is a semi-sweet light bread that is as much a part of Bulgarian Easter celebrations as turkey is a part of Thanksgiving in the U.S.

The first one is done, and we tried a bit to make sure it turned out.  It did.

This year's Kozunak was the best I have ever tasted.  Sasha is a wiz in the kitchen.

Sunday we hope to travel out to Sasha's childhood home for Easter with her sister and our nephew.  Together we will say, "Христос воскресе!"  Christ is risen!
